Gig Harbor Neighborhoods
Canterwood, Gig Harbor: Homes, Market & Club Life
Canterwood is a gated community on the north end of Gig Harbor, built around a private golf and country club. Most homes here are custom builds on large lots, developed from the late 1980s onward, with architectural standards enforced by the homeowners association. It sits at the higher end of the Gig Harbor market, with a level of architectural consistency that's unusual for Gig Harbor.
I'm also a Canterwood member — so if you're considering buying here, I can show you more than what's visible from the listing photos.

What makes Canterwood different
The gate changes the transaction
Buying or selling in Canterwood means working within HOA rules, architectural review, and club membership considerations that most Gig Harbor neighborhoods simply do not have. Those documents need to be read before an offer, not after.
Golf course frontage is its own market
Homes on the course carry a premium and attract a specific buyer. Pricing them off nearby non-course comps gets sellers in trouble in both directions.
Architectural consistency changes the comparison
Canterwood's architectural standards create a more consistent housing environment than you'll find in many Gig Harbor neighborhoods. Buyers still pay differently for location, condition, updates, lot size and golf-course frontage, but those standards are part of what defines the community.
Local expertise
What I look at when evaluating a Canterwood home
Course frontage
Not all golf views are equal. Lot position relative to the fairway, orientation, and proximity to foot traffic all affect both the experience and the resale.
Location inside the gates
Traffic patterns, privacy levels, and proximity to the gate and clubhouse vary meaningfully within Canterwood. The section matters.
Updates
Original 1990s finishes and an extensively renovated home do not belong in the same pricing bucket — even at the same square footage and lot size.
Lot and orientation
Trees, natural light, slope and usable outdoor space affect day-to-day life here more than square footage does. A flat half-acre is a different asset than a sloped one.
HOA plus club
Neighborhood ownership and club membership are two separate decisions with separate costs and obligations. Understanding both before you close is not optional.
What life in Canterwood is actually like
Life in Canterwood is organized around the club. Golf carts on the streets before dinner. Club events through the season. A pool a short walk from most lots. That combination — the gate, the grounds, and the private club — is what draws people here and what keeps them.
Lots are large by peninsula standards, often a third of an acre to well over an acre on the course. Mature landscaping, maintained to HOA standards, means the neighborhood looks consistent in a way newer plats rarely achieve.
Gig Harbor North — Costco, Target, the main grocery corridor — is five minutes from the gate. Downtown Gig Harbor is fifteen minutes. The location means you get the private enclave feel without being remote.
Club membership is separate from HOA membership. Many residents are not members. But understanding how the club works — and what different membership tiers actually include — is part of buying intelligently here.

Homes & Architecture
Canterwood homes were built predominantly in the 1990s through the early 2000s, with a range of custom and semi-custom construction. HOA-enforced architectural standards create visual consistency throughout the neighborhood, where traditional and Northwest-contemporary styles predominate.
Lot sizes tend to be generous, with some of the largest properties backing or fronting the golf course. Golf-course-frontage homes command a meaningful premium and form a distinct sub-market within Canterwood.
Homes range from well-maintained original condition to extensively renovated, so condition and updates have a significant effect on value. Over the years, many owners have added modern kitchens, updated primary suites, and expanded outdoor living spaces.
